Embark on a complex and unfamiliar adventure in which you will explore an impressive alternative version of a classic story. Join Kratos on a profound journey of reflection, growth, violence and the desire to become a better man for his son. In a world of monsters, dragons and gods, the weight of responsibility rests on your shoulders. And when your life is marked by blood and chaos, how can you avoid the mistakes of the past to protect your future?
Control your anger. Kratos has left his revenge against the gods of Olympus behind and now lives in the realms of Norse deities and monsters. In this cruel and unforgiving world, he must fight to survive, as well as teach his son to do the same and prevent him from making the same bloody mistakes as the Ghost of Sparta.
A new story, a new approach. This striking reimagining of God of War combines the iconic series’ signature elements (brutal combat, epic battles between gods and an impressive scale) with intense and emotional storytelling that once again redefines Kratos’ world.
Bold storytelling with new elements. As his son’s mentor and protector, and determined to earn his respect, Kratos faces an unexpected opportunity to control the anger that has characterised him for so long. Questioning the dark legacy he is leaving to his descendant, he hopes to make up for the shortcomings and horrors of his past.
A darker, more elemental world. From the marble artwork and ornate columns of Olympus to the wild forests, mountains and caves typical of the pre-Viking Norse landscape, the game presents a unique setting, with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters and gods.
Brutal physical combat. With a camera positioned at shoulder height, bringing the action closer to the player than ever before, the battles in God of War are very similar to the pantheon of Norse creatures that Kratos will have to face: magnificent, cruel and exhausting. A main weapon and a set of unprecedented abilities honour the distinctive spirit of God of War while presenting a vision of a violent conflict that introduces several innovations to the genre.
A second chance. Kratos once again takes on the role of a father. As the mentor and protector of Atreus, a son determined to earn his father’s respect, Kratos is forced to control the anger that has characterised him for so long, as he now finds himself in a very dangerous world with his son.
Larger landscapes. With greater emphasis placed on exploration and discovery, the world will encourage players to venture into every corner of the incredible yet dangerous landscapes of God of War, which are larger.
Creature creation: Revenant. The latest instalment of The Lost Pages of Norse Mythology includes the Revenant in its catalogue, a twisted creature with a sickening devotion to Seidr magic.
Stone Mason triptych. Witness the story of Thamur, the giant stonemason. He was the greatest builder the realms had ever known, until Thor, the great destroyer, appeared.
Your weapons: Axe and Shield. Take possession of Kratos’ Leviathan Axe. Kratos’ Shield
You can use Kratos’ shield to withstand enemy attacks and break through their defences. Learn more about the weapons of God of War.
Kratos’ childhood is explained during the development of the first game. He is mistreated, as tall and strong children used to be in ancient Greece. His brother, who bore a mark that the oracle had predicted would be carried by the one who caused the downfall of Olympus, is kidnapped by Ares and taken to the realm of the dead.
After receiving training, Kratos, now married and with a daughter, Calliope, becomes a great general in the Spartan army and vows not to stop until Sparta’s glory is at its peak. His armies’ tactics were brutal, but highly effective. However, one day, a confrontation with the barbarian army ended badly for his forces. With his army destroyed and on the verge of being killed by the barbarian leader, Kratos calls upon Ares, the god of war, offering him his life in exchange. The god descends from the heavens and destroys all the enemies, then gives Kratos the Blades of Chaos, which are attached to his arms by chains.
The Spartan warrior completely succumbs to Ares’ power, and the god demands that he carry out certain tasks of destruction and conquest. Kratos’ army’s tactics become even more brutal than before, slaughtering anyone who offered even the slightest resistance. During one of his missions, Kratos was ordered to burn down a village that opposed Sparta’s army.
In his thirst for blood and conquest, Kratos wanted to enter the village temple, but the oracle warned him that he should not go inside. Nevertheless, he pushed her aside and entered, killing everyone inside. When he threw his blades at his victims for the final time, he realised that he had killed his wife and daughter. Kratos was devastated and, as punishment for this act and his brutality, the ashes of his wife and daughter were to remain attached to his skin for eternity; although Ares explained that he had done this so that Kratos would have no emotional ties and could be turned into the perfect warrior, the Spartan warrior nevertheless refused to remain the god of war’s subject.
