Before Super Smash Bros Melee for Nintendo GameCube, these and other age-old questions were answered instantly with Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 64, the original all-star Nintendo tournament fighting game. You can pit Nintendo's most popular characters against each other.

The 12 superstars are Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Jigglypuff, Ness, Captain Falcon and Pikachu. Each has a specific 3-D fighting stage, with hidden powers and obstacles scattered throughout all the areas.

Two to four players can fight simultaneously on the same screen, or one player can fight their way through the tournament to reach the secret key at the top. The aim is to knock out your opponent as many times as possible within a set time limit. If you master the fight, you can send your opponent flying, into the sky, where they become a constellation. Link strikes with his Super Sword Slash, Yoshi swallows his enemies and turns them into eggs, and Fox McCloud never parts with his powerful Laser Gun.

Any character can use a wide variety of attack items such as Fire Flowers and Bob-ombs. It is extremely easy to learn how to play Super Smash Bros.; however, reaching master level can take many hours of practice. A subtle technique can make the difference between victory and defeat, and each character has special strengths and weaknesses that you need to learn and put into practice. 

Super Smash Bros. is also full of surprises; on Pikachu's stage, for example, a multitude of Pokémon appear to help and hinder the combatants. It may seem strange to see two good guys like Mario and Fox McCloud hitting each other, but don't worry: when the fight is over, you'll discover that all the characters are actually good friends.
